Welcome to Episode 2 of “Nobody Asked Us! Schmoozin’ with Kit and Donna,” where two Episcopal priests hold forth on topics they think are fascinating, and hope you might as well.
In this episode, we dive into the “Jeremy Bearimy” episode of The Good Place (streaming on Netflix), a comedy from the late 2010s about a group of folks who die and “think” they are in the Good Place, but … complications ensue. In this Season 3 episode, the characters discover they are completely and totally doomed, and one answer to total doomy-ness is, of course, nihilism. Nothing matters, so make a big pot of chili with Peeps and M&Ms (Chidi’s approach) or demand free margaritas for your birthday, even though it is not your birthday (Elinor), but everything is going to crap, so “it’s my birthday!”
But nihilism is not really the answer. Even confronted with the mess the world is in today, what with the decline of our republic, the shaming of our international allies, and the ever-looming shadow of unchecked climate change.
There are other options, other ways to hope. And this episode tries to climb out of the Peeps chili pot, and into some kind of hopeful way to live.
